Capt D Shaw (Letters, 18-24 June) cannot be familiar with US air traffic control (ATC) procedures.
When ATC clears an aircraft to "taxi to" an assigned take-off runway, the absence of holding instructions authorises the aircraft to cross all runways which the taxi route intersects, except the assigned take-off runway (Airman Information Manual 4-3-18).
US ATC is not flawless, but I doubt Capt Shaw could seriously name any ATC service that comes close in clarity, competence and capacity.
