Delta Air Lines says it expects to report a first quarter net loss of between $85 million and $110 million due to flight reductions, a weakening economy and consumer fear of a strike by Delta's nearly 10,000 pilots.

Northwest also expects its first quarter loss to be larger than expected due to a drop in business travel. The airline has forecast a loss of up to $150 million.

United Airlines issued a similar financial forecast, saying the first quarter loss will be larger than estimated. United blamed a softening US economy.
