Major US airlines almost doubled pilot hiring in 1995, according to Atlanta, Georgia-based Aviation Information Resources (AIR). The consultancy says that 12 majors hired 2,377 pilots, up from 1,266 in 1994. The forecast is for the airlines to hire 2,500 pilots in 1996. Overall, 196 airlines surveyed by AIR hired 8,814 pilots in 1995, up from 8,044 in 1994. AIR forecasts 9,000-10,000 new pilot jobs in 1996. Hiring at regional and start-up carriers declined in 1995, AIR says.
