THE USA IS making more than half of worldwide weapons sales for the first time, says the US Arms Control and Disarmament Agency (ACDA), but arms sales overall are dropping.
Sales fell by 29% in 1994, the latest year for which complete figures are available, to $22 billion, from $28 billion the previous year. US arms transfers totalling $12.4 billion accounted for 56% of the total. The ACDA report shows that US weapons sales dropped from $17 billion in 1989. The UK ($3.4 billion), Russia ($1.3 billion), China ($800 million) and France ($800 million) followed in sales terms.
