US Undersecretary of State Thomas Pickering visiting China to explain the bombing by a US pilot of the Chinese Embassy during NATO's air assault on Yugoslavia.
Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said he had gone with an inter-agency team in order to explain what happened and to say it was a "tragic accident".
"We have made very clear that we consider our relationship with China an important one, one that needs to get beyond this," Albright said on NBC's Meet the Press.
The May 7 bombing of China's embassy in Belgrade, killed three people.
