THE USA AND ISRAEL aim to field two prototypes of the tactical high-energy laser (THEL) air-defence system by 1999.

Two successful tests of the Nautilus laser-gun technology demonstrator were carried out on 6 and 8 February at the White Sands range in New Mexico. The programme is being funded by the US Space and Strategic Defence Commands, with TRW as prime contractor and three Israeli companies as subcontractors.

The joint US-Israeli programme began in 1991 and is aimed at developing a laser gun capable of destroying short-range rockets and missiles.

During the first test, the laser gun was locked on an incoming unarmed Russian-made BM-21 artillery rocket for 15s. The rocket was destroyed. In the second test, the laser beam hit an armed BM-21 rocket, and again destroyed it.

The move to full-scale development will bring greater involvement for three Israeli companies. Rafael will concentrate on developing a compact carbon-dioxide laser-generator. The MBT weapon division of Israel Aircraft Industries will develop sensors and fire-control elements, while Tadiran will work on command and control units for the THEL.
