The Boeing HH-47 Chinook, Lockheed Martin/AgustaWestland US101 and Sikorsky HH-92 will contest the US Air Force’s next-generation combat search and rescue helicopter requirement, following a Bell Boeing decision to withdraw the V-22 Osprey tiltrotor. “The CSAR-X programme’s requirements and funding profile did not call for the advanced speed and range offered by the V-22,” says Bell. To replace the USAF’s Sikorsky HH-60G Pave Hawks from 2010, the 141-aircraft CSAR-X programme is worth up to $10 billion.
