Red Bull Air Race is to push ahead with its San Francisco heat round next week, marking the first aerial race to take place since the fatal crash at rival series Aero GP's Maltese grand prix earlier this month.
The Red Bull series makes its penultimate stop in San Francisco on Saturday 7 October. Taking place between Marina Green and Aquatic Park in the city, the Californian round is the closest spectators get to the aircraft. The race also mimicks the race course of the Valetta Bay where Swedish aerobatics champion Gábor Varga was killed following a high-speed collision on 9 September, leading to safety fears.
The Red Bull series is the largest of the two aerial races and the only stop in the USA. Separately, the US National Championship Air Races takes place at Reno, Nevada from 12-17 September. The UK round at Longleat was cancelled due to poor weather on 2 September.
Red Bull has released a behind-the-scenes video sequence of the race, looking at the pilot's eye view of the events. Click here to view.
