Vietnam Airlines has reported record passenger traffic figures for 2002 as it continues expanding at a rapid pace.

The state-owned airline says it carried just over 4 million passengers in 2002, up 18% on the figure for the previous year. Cargo traffic during the year was up 20% at 65,000t.

Vietnam Airlines, which introduced a new corporate identity last year as part of its continuing modernisation plan, aims to expand further in the years ahead with new routes and more aircraft. In 2002 it signed for five A321s from Airbus and agreed to lease or purchase six Boeing 777-200ERs. The carrier now operates eight Boeing 767-300ERs, two A321s, 10 A320s, eight ATR 72s and two Fokker 70s.

Services between Vietnam and Taiwan are also set to increase following a new air services agreement, which allows for new airlines to operate between the two countries.
