The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has launched an investigation into how a Virgin Australia Boeing 737-800 veered off the runway during landing at Darwin International airport on 6 December.
The aircraft, registered VH-VUI (MSN 34441) was operating a flight from Melbourne when it encountered gusty wind conditions while landing on runway 29. It subsequently veered off the runway.
The Bureau says that the 737 suffered “minor damage”, and has categorised the event as a serious incident. Investigators have been dispatched to inspect the aircraft, runway and surrounding area, while further information from the aircraft and air traffic control is being gathered.
The investigation is expected to be completed by September 2017.
