Pilots of new generation very light jets (VLJ) are being offered two new products designed to enhance safety, from the International Business Aviation Council (IBAC) and the National Business Aircraft Association (NBAA). They have developed a set of “best practices” for VLJs and the single-pilot environment, with particular attention to safety management systems, flight operations procedures and training. The NBAA has produced training guidelines for VLJs to help meet what it describes as the need for “an extraordinary training process to ensure an orderly and safe transition” from propeller-powered light aircraft to single-pilot jets. A manual has been produced for single-pilot VLJ operations that provides a template for application of the International Standard for Business Aircraft Operations manual to all types of VLJ operation.
