Spanish low-cost carrier Vueling has unveiled major expansion plans for next summer under which it will add 28 new destinations next summer from its Barcelona El Prat base.
The expansion, detailed by chief executive Alex Cruz during an event this evening in Barcelona highlighting the carrier's growth vision, will take to around 100 the number of destinations it will serve out from its main base.
The new routes cover a string of destinations in Germany, including Dortmund, Dresden, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Hannover and Stuttgart. Other new routes include connections to London Gatwick; the Nordic cities of Helsinki, Gothenburg and Oslo; the North African destinations of Casablanca, Fez, Nador and Tangiers, and flights to the Greek islands of Rhodes and Kos. It is also adding new routes to Italy including Bari, Bologna and Turin.
The Barcelona-based carrier, in which Iberia holds around a 46% stake, operates a fleet of 57 Airbus narrowbodies and has grown rapidly out of El Prat since the collapse of Spanair earlier this year. The airline is in the final stage of a long-term fleet renewal tender.
Vueling carried a little over 12 million passengers generating revenues of $1.2 billion in 2011.
