The selection process for an architect to design the passenger terminal at the upcoming Western Sydney airport has kicked off.
Australia’s urban infrastructure minister Alan Tudge says that expressions of interest are now open, and the first stage in the competitive selection process will see the final terminal design chosen by the end of 2019.
Eligible firms will have to have experience in designing an airport similar in size to Western Sydney in the past five years, and they will also have to demonstrate how they plan to use local architects or design students in the process.
When it opens in 2026, Western Sydney is expected to have the capacity to handle 10 million passengers per annum through a terminal that will cater to both domestic and international flights.
Canberra says the airport will be designed to grow in stages without disrupting its operations, with a view to ultimately catering to 82 million passengers per year in the 2060s.
