Don Bell - WestJet's executive vice-president for corporate culture and one of WestJet's four founders - is retiring.

Bell held various posts at the airline, but is best known for instilling the much-admired team spirit among WestJet's 6,000 employees. A licensed pilot, Bell flew about one scheduled round trip a week, and used those flights to keep in touch with staff attitudes.

Aged 52, Bell has announced no other employment plans. He owns C$15 million ($14 million) worth of WestJet stock. He will also step down as chairman of the Air Transport Association of Canada.

Chief executive Clive Beddoe thanked Bell "for his hard work and dedication through good times and bad".
