US CARRIER WORLD Airways is bidding to re-enter the transatlantic-passenger charter business. Perceiving a strong demand in the leisure market because of the weak dollar, the airline is planning to introduce routes from Germany, Switzerland and the UK from May.

Application has been made for weekly routes from Los Angeles to London (most likely Stansted); New York Kennedy, Newark and Philadelphia to Belfast and/or Dublin and Shannon; and from San Juan, Puerto Rico to Cologne/Bonn via Manchester. The San Juan route will serve the growing year-round Caribbean cruising programmes.

The Florida market, particularly favoured by German and Swiss travelers, will be served from Berlin, Cologne/Bonn, and eventually Zurich. World Airways will be operating 347-seat McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30s and 409-seat MD-11s. Its fleet consists of five DC-10-30s and seven MD-11s, and the airline is negotiating with the manufacturer for two more extended-range MD-11s for delivery in time for the northern summer holiday programme.
