Yemen has taken delivery of a batch of MiG-29SMT single-seat multirole fighters plus two MiG-29UBT twin-seat operational trainers from Russia's RSK MiG, marking the first export shipment of the types.

The aircraft are expected to become operational with Yemen's air force between next month and February 2005, following the completion of flight demonstrations and weapons testing by the service. First deliveries in late September followed the receipt earlier this year of type certification for the MiG-29SMT/UBT by the Russian defence ministry.

Yemen has ordered a customised version of the MiG-29SMT equipped with the Phazoton-NIIR Zhuk-ME multi-mode radar.
