Sir - In response to Capt T A Seedsman's letter (Flight International, 5-11 February, P41), the maintenance-training department at SimuFlite Training International recognises the value and importance of simulation training for maintenance staff.

Engine-run and taxi certification is made available to all of our business-aircraft maintenance-training clients. When compared to the expense of replacing an engine, the additional cost and time spent in the simulator is indeed a small price to pay.

-Sir - Brookhouse Paxford makes training simulators, including one for engine runs.

Capt Seedsman is correct in saying that ground engine-running at any time can be expensive and dangerous. It follows that such training must not be carried out "on the job", but in a safer environment.

-Sir - Thomson Training & Simulation has supplied maintenance-dedicated simulators for a range of aircraft to operators worldwide.

It is true, however that such devices are rare. This may be caused by a complex mixture of issues, including regulatory requirements and perceived economics. A malfunction during starting could destroy an engine. Today's simulator technology is able to handle all these issues.
