Maintenance, repair and overhaul shop MTU Zhuhai is expanding and plans add more engine types to its repertoire.

MTU Zhuhai president and chief executive Holger Sindemann says construction has started on a building for storage. Next year it plans to expand its main facility so it has more capacity to carry out more engine MRO work.

In 2008 MTU Zhuhai had 173 inductions whereas in 2007 it had around 130.

"This year it will be more or less the same with slight growth," he says.

MTU Zhuhai has capacity for 200 shop visits, but the expansion will increase capacity in 2011 to 300.

At present it handles only MRO work on engines for narrowbody aircraft, but it plans to add other engine types including widebody powerplants, says Sindemann.

"Our aim is to be Asia's number one MRO and to achieve that we must add new engine models," he adds.

MTU Zhuhai's current capability includes CFM International CFM56-3/5B/7B engines as well as International Aero Engines V2500A5s.
