AAR has agreed to be the first MRO firm to voluntarily share safety data with the US Federal Aviation Administration, by joining the agency's Aviation Safety Information Analysis and Sharing (ASIAS) programme.
“The FAA is very pleased to have AAR launch the ASIAS program among MROs,” says Steven Douglas, FAA's manager, aircraft maintenance division. “We believe that sharing and analysing safety data are important for the aviation industry as a whole.”
FAA associate administrator for aviation safety Peggy Gilligan said in April that the agency had signed an agreement with the first MRO firm to join the data sharing programme. She had noted then that while airlines have embraced the voluntary reporting programme, MRO firms have yet to do so.
“We understand that voluntary reporting is critical to overall safety in the aviation industry and are excited to partner with the FAA’s efforts,” says Art Smith, AAR vice president and chief quality officer. “Although we are now officially signed on to the ASIAS program, our customers and other partners know AAR has long had a culture and practice of sharing safety information.”
Illinois-based AAR has six aircraft maintenance facilities in Indianapolis, Oklahoma City, Miami, Duluth (Minnesota), Hot Springs (Arkansas) and Lake Charles (Louisiana).
