AirTran Airways has started relocating its operations at Philadelphia International Airport as part of a $20 million relocation project being managed by US Airways that involves several carriers at the airport.
Today AirTran says it has started the process of moving from concourse D to concourse E, and during the transition phase its ticket counter and baggage claim will remain in the D concourse. The carrier plans to operate from gates E6 and E8.
AirTran expects the relocation of its baggage claim to concourse E later this year followed by ticket counter operations in the Spring of 2010.
In May of this year US Airways told employees that it was managing a project for the airport authority to relocate Delta to the domestic concourse at Philadelphia. After their merger Delta and Northwest are consolidating operations in Philadelphia.
Delta's move to international gates in Philadelphia became a point of contention with US Airways in late 2007. US Airways argued it did not have sufficient gate space to run efficient transatlantic operations from Philadelphia, which serves as a hub for the carrier.
Recently US Airways said it expects to secure access to Delta's international gates in Philadelphia during the fourth quarter.
