The Dornier DO-S joined the growing ranks of light sport aircraft when it was shown to the aviation world at the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) AirVenture at Oshkosh.
German manufacturer Dornier introduced the carbon DO-S, a descendent of the DO-24 flying boat. Marketed as a light sport amphibian trainer, the DO-S features a wing that quickly folds to 90e_SDgr for storage either in a yacht, trailer or hangar.
"We have something special, a very interesting product reflecting the Dornier heritage and commitment," says company owner Iren Dornier, grandson of Claude Dornier, who came to fame in the early 20th century for designing flying boats and improving the zeppelin.
The company is marketing their new aircraft as a very light aircraft in Germany, with US and European Part 23 certification for increased take-off weight with a diesel engine and extended range of more than 1,850km (1,000nm) also sought.
The DO-S is powered by a 100hp (75kW) 912 Rotax drawing from two 50 litre (13USgal) tanks. The amphibious aircraft costs $129,000.
