Agrani Satellite Services has moved closer to realising its ambition of launching India's first privately-owned satellite system, with the award of a US State Department export licence to Agrani satellite manufacturer Alcatel Space.

The export licence is necessary because Agrani uses US-made components. It is a major mile-stone for Mumbai-based Agrani as Lockheed Martin, which was awarded the contract before Alcatel to build and supply the satellite, had to withdraw from the project after US State Department refusal to clear the export due to technology transfer issues following India's nuclear tests in May 1998. The sanctions were lifted by the USA late last year.

The three axis stabilised Agrani, featuring C-band and Ku-band transponders, will be launched by an Ariane booster next year.

It will provide mobile and conventional communications, broadcasting, multimedia and internet services.

Alcatel Space and Arianespace have taken minor stakes in the programme.
