Air New Zealand (ANZ) will replace Qantas Airways as its maintenance provider in the Australian cities of Sydney and Melbourne.

An ANZ spokesman in Auckland says Cathay Pacific Airways will replace Qantas in Sydney and John Holland Aviation Services will replace Qantas in Melbourne.

The reasons for the change is the diversification of ANZ's maintenance contracts, he says. ANZ will continue using Qantas in Perth and Adelaide, he adds.

The spokesman also confirms ANZ is in discussions with Qantas for compensation for a series of 'wildcat' strikes by Qantas engineers in March.

A well-placed industry source says ANZ is seeking "several hundreds of thousands of New Zealand dollars" in compensation - far less than the millions reported in various Australian news media.
