The global civil maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) market in 2012 was estimated to be more than $65 billion in 2012, says a new study released by the Aeronautical Repair Station Association, using analysis from consultancy ICF SH&E.

Engine overhauls made up the largest segment of that market with $26.1 billion, and component maintenance was valued at $16.8 billion.

Heavy maintenance makes up $13 billion of that market, with 38% of heavy maintenance performed on North American aircraft. Line maintenance totalled $9.9 billion, with 30% performed on aircraft in the region.

About 4,100 commercial MRO companies employing about 196,000 people are based in North America, with small and medium-sized firms making up 84% of that total. More than 143,000 technicians are based in the USA.
