Air Freight Asia 2007 is opening at a hugely positive time for the region as it leads the world’s growth in freight demand, according to the latest figures produced by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
May’s 5% global growth in freight demand rose sharply over April’s figure of 2.8%, representing the largest increase since September 2006. “The pick-up in freight, led by Asia, could be the first sign of strengthening demand,” said IATA’s director general and CEO Giovanni Bisignani.“Over the next months we will be closely watching the impact of several changing conditions, including intensifying competition from other modes of transport and structural changes such as manufacturers producing lighter goods.”
While air freight demand growth was led by airlines in the Middle East at 10.5%, it was airlines in this region that drove the overall growth, with demand doubling from 3.8% in April to 7.6% in May, reflecting the strong levels of economic and trade growth in Asia Pacific.
