A JOINT US government/ industry project to develop a low-level airspace system for Atlanta, Georgia, is expected to be demonstrated by July, one year before the city hosts the centennial Olympic Games.
The aim is to have a network of helicopter routes over Atlanta's freeway system by July 1996, when some 250 helicopters operating from up to 13 sites in the region will help to overcome some of the expected traffic problems.
A part of the system is planned to be operational by July, in a small-scale demonstration of its capabilities, says Thomas Marlow, chairman of the Helicopter Association International's Olympics' support committee.
The project will provide a major demonstration of the use of the global-positioning system and satellite communications for navigation and surveillance of aircraft flying below 2,200ft (670m).
