Alfred Ötsch has been appointed by Austrian Airlines to succeed Vagn Soerensen as chief executive from May.

A native of Wiener Neustadt and educated in Vienna, Ötsch, 52, has spent his entire working life with Siemens, progressing to a number of management positions. He is currently a member of the board of Siemens Austria.

Ötsch has wasted no time in trying to make his mark, having been widely quoted as saying that he will not sell any part of Austrian to a strategic airline investor during his tenure. His comments are a veiled reference to Soerensen who is known to favour an equity tie-up with Lufthansa.
