Aviat Aircraft's resurrected Monocoupe 110 Special appeared at this year's Experimental Aircraft Association convention at Oshkosh, Wisconsin, just days after its first flight. Initial flight results exceed expectations, says Aviat. The original Monocoupe was a 1932 two-seat racing design built around a 110-140kW (145-185hp) radial engine, while the 1999 version uses a 150kW Textron Lycoming AEIO-360 turning a Hartzell constant-speed propeller. Working under the original 1932 CAR 3 type certificate, Aviat expects to complete certification of the $159,000 aircraft by the end of the year, with first deliveries by early 2000. Aviat is using the 110 Special as a testbed for a new electronic flight instrumentation system for its Millennium Swift.
