AlliedSignal Aerospace's continued improvements of the Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS) - including the addition of new obstacle alerting, peaks display and geometric altitude capabilities - were recognised by judges at the awards. They named it the winner of the Avionics category.

The EGPWS system is not new, but judges said work done by the company in the past year to enhance the system should be recognised. They said it was the most advanced system ever developed for the prevention of aircraft colliding into objects such as mountains.

Although crashes into man-made obstacles are rare, AlliedSignal also developed a North American database of such obstacles so it could provide the most complete protection possible.

Finalists in this category were Rockwell Collins for its Highway in the Sky pathway flight guidance system that guides aircraft through crowded airspace and Smiths Industries for its Speech Recognition Module for the Eurofighter Typhoon - the first production fighter to feature a direct voice input system.
