Snecma chairman Jean-Paul Bechat is questioning the aerospace industry's need for the new breed of dedicated e-commerce ventures.

Bechat, who is also chairman of the national French industry grouping GIFAS, says French companies are in many cases working on their own e-commerce operations. "In Snecma all our companies are preparing for business-to-business activity on the Internet."

Entrepreneurs behind some of the 'dot.com' companies "impress the market" by stressing their own efficiency, he observes.

"OK, they are trying to develop their ideas but I want to say that we are working to be able to ensure that we are ready to interface directly with our customers and provide all the services they expect from us."
