Boeing is to establish a maintenance base at Kelly AFB in San Antonio, Texas, which is scheduled to be closed in 2001. The centre is to open in 18 months.

New Piper Aircraft has sold 16 Archer III piston singles to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Institute of Aviation for ab initio training. Deliveries will begin in June, to replace existing aircraft.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) has ordered five Cessna 172R piston single trainers for delivery in April to the Singapore Flying College at Perth in Australia, to replace earlier 172s. Perth-based Airflite will maintain the aircraft.

Italy's Ministry of Defence has signed a $11.3 million contract with Textron Systems for five mobile microwave landing systems (MMLS) for delivery in 1999. Italy is the first export customer and the first European NATO nation to buy the MMLS to support rapid deployment missions.
