The US Navy has completed the second major review of the Boeing P-8A Multi-mission Maritime Aircraft (MMA) programme and the aircraft will now enter its preliminary design phase following approval from the technical review board. The P-8A is the navy's replacement platform for the P-3C. Its primary mission is to provide persistent anti-submarine warfare services, but the aircraft will also provide anti-surface warfare and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities. The navy plans to purchase up to 108 aircraft.
