The Challenger could soon benefit from a fly-by-wire aircraft control system

Bombardier has completed the installation of a fly-by-wire (FBW) research flight control system in a Challenger testbed.

The Active Control Technology (ACT) demonstrator has been fitted with a sidestick controller and flight control computer driving new servo-actuators on all the control surfaces. The conventional mechanical links have been retained for use by the safety pilot in the left-hand seat.

After extensive "aircraft-in-loop" ground testing, the ACT testbed will be used to evaluate different control concepts, feedback philosophies and flight envelope protection capabilities.

Bombardier will use data to draw up the specifications for fly-by-wire flight control systems in future aircraft.

The first programme to benefit could be the BRJ-X 90/110-seat regional airliner, under study. Bombardier has said that its Continental super mid-size business jet will have conventional flight controls, on cost grounds.
