Embraer is at Farnborough with the announcement that production of the Super Tucano advanced military trainer/light attack aircraft has started at the firm's Sao Jose dos Campos complex.

Launch customer for the aircraft is the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), which has ordered 76 aircraft, with options on a further 23. Embraer alsohas an order for a further 10 from an unnamed South American government.

"The choice for the Super Tucano by the Brazilian Air Force was based on the aircraft's innovation, excellence and affordability, all features that are the cornerstones of this product – a consolidation of Embraer's long tradition and experience in designing and manufacturing military trainers," said Mauricio Bothelho, Embraer president and chief executive.

He added: "This aircraft is the perfect combination of turboprop power with fourth-generation avionics and armament systems, which makes it the next-generation aircraft that will enable us to continue the solid and fruitful partnership we have built with several air forces around the world, and with more to come."

Simulation

One of the innovations on the aircraft is cutting-edge in-flight virtual simulation technology for training purposes. It allows student pilots to increase their mission effectiveness, information management and situational awareness skills.

The Super Tucano will operate in tandem with Brazil's new SIVAM (Amazon Surveillance Programme) aircraft which feature one of the most sophisticated surveillance systems.

Once in service with the FAB, the aircraft will fly day/night border surveillance missions, pursuing and intercepting aerial targets and monitoring illegal activities within the SIVAM programme.
