Brazil's CH-X heavylift helicopter competition has been narrowed to the Boeing CH-47SD Super Chinook and Mil Mi-26T, offered by Rosboronexport, with the Sikorsky CH-53E eliminated.
The programme calls for flight-testing of the machines during the first quarter of 2003, with a final decision expected in the second half of the year. The $100 million programme involves the acquisition of four heavylift helicopters for transport and combat search-and-rescue roles. Requirements include the capability to sling-lift outsized loads, including Lockheed Martin's TPS-117 portable surveillance radar - a key element of Brazil's SIVAM programme.
Boeing's offer is understood to include provision for air-to-air refuelling. Rosboronexport is partnered with Brazilian aerospace company Avibr s. The Russo-Brazilian partnership tender comprises three different Mil M-26T offerings, involving used low-time airframes, new- build helicopters with glass cockpits, and upgraded used Mi-26Ts.
