Good Week

UMECO.  The UK company may operate in the unglamorous sphere of supply chain outsourcing, but it is delivering on its strategy of expanding through acquisitions, on both sides of the Atlantic. Last week, Umeco bought the assets of Miami-based US Airmotive International to merge into its Aeropia subsidiary, also based in Miami. Both businesses distribute aerospace chemicals to the original equipment manufacturing and maintenance sectors. Total investment will be $1 million.

British Airways. The airline was put in its place over its attempt to ban an employee from wearing a gold cross. Chairman Martin Broughton called for UK prime minister Tony Blair's support during last week's Confederation of British Industry conference, but Blair replied: "One of the things I learned in politics is that there are battles really, really worth fighting, and battles really, really not worth fighting. What I would say to you is, get yourself on the right side of the line on that one."
