BWIA West Indies Airways is attempting to meet the Trinidad and Tobago government's requirements to grant financial aid.

After unions rejected concessions last September, the Caribbean carrier faced the risk of bankruptcy. But the government offered a $3 million grant and $10 million loan if BWIA could cut monthly costs by $1.4 million. That is slightly more than BWIA's annual losses.

The airline has laid off 617 staff, outsourced ramp operations, and is discussing a standalone joint venture with the government for heavy maintenance.
