Canadian flight-simulator maker CAE has bought US terrain visualisation software developer Terrain Experts (Terrex) for about $10 million in CAE common shares.

CAE targeted the US company "for its very successful commercial-off-the-shelf software business model" and its products, says Bruce Miles, CAE's director of business development. Engineering and development teams from both companies are now looking at integrating CAE simulation and database software into the Terrex product line.

The Tucson, Arizona-based software developer's products include the imaging software tool Terra Vista, used in flight simulators to create three-dimensional virtual terrain.

Seven-year-old Terrex employs about 40 people.
