CAE has received contracts worth a combined C$55 million ($44.7 million) to deliver a variety of training services to air force customers in Germany, Italy and the UK.

The Canadian company is to upgrade the Medallion-6000 visual system on a full mission simulator for the Luftwaffe's Panavia Tornado strike aircraft at Holloman AFB, New Mexico under a new deal with Germany's BWB procurement agency. It will also update similar devices for the air force's Eurofighter interceptors through a separate award placed by Eurofighter Simulation Systems.

Lockheed Martin has meanwhile signed a repeat deal for CAE to deliver maintenance services and logistics support for training devices used with the Italian air force's C-130J tactical transport fleet at Pisa air base.

CAE is also to conduct a major upgrade to a simulator for the UK Royal Air Force's eight Boeing CH-47D Chinook HC3 transport helicopters, with the stored aircraft now undergoing a modification programme that will result in them entering service from mid-2009. The training device is located at the service's CAE-run Medium Support Helicopter Aircrew Training Facility at RAF Benson in Oxfordshire.

"The volatile price of fuel, environmental impacts, and significant wear and tear on weapon systems are leading governments and military forces to a greater use of simulation and synthetic training," says Marc Parent, CAE's group president, simulation products and military training and services. "CAE is well-positioned for solid, steady growth of our military business."
