CAE has won a C$47 million ($29 million) contract from the Singapore air force to supply a full mission simulator for the Boeing CH-47 Chinook heavylift helicopter by 2004.
The unit will be equipped with CAE's Medallion high-end visual system, which includes additional channels for the helicopter's chin-windows. A vibration platform will be integrated with motion system to increase fidelity. The Canadian company will develop "intelligent and interactive" threat environments in which training will be conducted.
CAE will also supply a mission planning and instructor operator station, and a software support facility featuring a visual database modelling station. The company will also provide maintenance support for the 15-year life of the simulator.
CAE has proposed that Singaporean pilots and flight engineers train at the company's Medium Support Helicopter Aircrew Training Facility at RAF Benson in the UK until the simulator is delivered. Royal Air Force and Royal Netherlands Air Force Chinook crews already train there.
CAE has also received contracts in excess of C$6 million to upgrade the Royal Australian Air Force's Lockheed Martin C-130J full mission simulator and Australian Army's SikorskyS-70A-9 Black Hawk simulators to ensure concurrency with the aircraft. The C-130J will be upgraded with the latest Block 5.3 avionics software. CAE will deliver a new C-130H simulator this year.
The cockpit of the S-70A full flight and mission simulator will be updated to match the operational fleet, a simulated night-vision-goggle training capability will be added, and the computer and instructor brief/debrief stations upgraded. CAE has also completed a study on the Royal Australian Navy's SikorskyS-70B-2 flight and mission simulator to support future upgrade decisions.
