Canada and the European Union have moved closer to forging an open skies-type air transport agreement, following an initial meeting between negotiators in Leipzig, Germany.
Canada's minister of transport, infrastructure and communities Lawrence Cannon says both sides have compromised on certain issues: "The basis for an agreement appears to be within reach." Successful negotiations would bring the legal certainty that the EU has sought to allow European carriers to fly from any point in the EU to any point in Canada.
A total three rounds of Canada-EU negotiations have taken place since both parties' official summit in June 2007.
