Canada’s new Conservative government is to spend an additional C$5.3 billion ($4.78 billion) on defence over the next five years. Some C$1.1 billion of the “Canada First” fund will be invested within the next two years to “acquire equipment needed to support a multi-role, combat-capable
maritime, land and air force,” says the administration’s newly released 2006 budget.
