CFMI plans to define the study areas for a follow-on Tech 56 programme within the next six months as it prepares for the possible launch of a next-generation engine in the 27,000-30,000lb thrust (120-133kN) range in 2008. The plan, if adopted, is intended to have a new engine ready for entry into service on the projected Airbus and Boeing new narrowbodies in 2011-12. Executive vice-president Bill Clapper says noise is the key driver for the next-generation engine "because it has a strong impact on what the engine cycle will be". Other projected targets include 12% lower engine-related operating costs than the -5B/7B, 25% lower maintenance costs and 50% lower emissions relative to the current single annular combustor design. "We are talking about launching a technology demonstrator to give us confidence," says president Pierre Fabre.
