China Eastern Airlines and Singapore Technologies Aerospace (ST Aero) are to establish a new commercial aircraft joint-venture maintenance facility in Shanghai.

The partners aim for the joint-venture facility - which will be 51%-owned by China Eastern, the rest being held by ST Aero - to be operational by the end of the year. The joint-venture company will be set up with capital of almost $100 million.

ST Aero says the new venture will provide maintenance services for Airbus and Boeing aircraft, from facilities at Shanghai's Pudong and Hongqiao airports. It hopes to employ around 1,000 engineers within five years.

The planned Shanghai facility further expands ST Aero's global presence in the maintenance market. The company has, over the past year, added a third facility in the USA, San Antonio Aerospace, and its first in Europe - Bournemouth Aviation Services in the UK.
