China Southern Airlines has begun a three month wi-fi trial on one of its Airbus A330-300s.
In response to queries from Flightglobal, the SkyTeam alliance member says it is conducting trials based on Ku-band satellite internet service provided by China Telecom. The trial, which will end on 30 September as approved by the Civil Aviation Administration of China, will be conducted on the A330-300 registered B-5922 and operating the Guangzhou-Beijing route.
The carrier is also in discussions to roll out the wi-fi service onto nine other A330s.
In a separate statement, China Southern says the Ku-band system provides data stability and good bandwidth, while eliminating the need to build ground stations, and reduces complexities during the debugging process.
