CHINESE AIRPORTS handled close to 100 million passengers in 1995, a growth of more than 27% over the previous year.
With air travel continuing to boom since the liberalising of the aviation market over the past five years, China's leading international hubs may soon join the Airports Council International (ACI), following a visit to Beijing earlier this year by the Council.
On top of the spectacular passenger growth, freight volumes also grew by nearly one-third, to 2 million tonnes. Latest forecasts predict that the volumes will have doubled by the end of the decade.
Beijing Capital handled 15 million passengers in 1995, which would have ranked it among the top 50 airports in the world and among the ten largest in the Asia/Pacific region.
