Chinese airports saw strong growth last year, handling a combined 1.15 billion passengers, up 12.9% from 2016.
Domestic passenger numbers grew 13.4% to 1.04 billion, while international passengers climbed 9.2% to 112 million, data from the Civil Aviation Administration of China shows.
Cargo and mail throughput amounted to 16.7 million tons, 7.1% higher than a year ago. Aircraft movements rose 10.9% to 10.2 million.
Last year, the country had a total of 229 airports. Of these, 32 gateways handled more than 10 million passengers, four more than the year before, accounting for 81% of the country’s total passenger throughput.
There were 26 airports that handled 2-10 million passengers, five more than the year before, catering to about 11.8% of the country’s total passengers.
On the cargo front, airports in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou handled about half of the country’s total throughput.
