With speculation mounting that Bell Helicopter Textron is about to announce its purchase of Boeing's commercial helicopter business, Bell Boeing received a shot in the arm yesterday with the confirmation of three more 609 civil tilt rotor sales.

Bell says Japan-based Mitsui Bussan Aerospace has signed a preliminary purchase agreement giving it options on three 609s. The three aircraft are included in the total of 61 commitments to date.

"By selecting the 609, Mitsui has demonstrated tremendous foresight regarding the future aviation needs of Japan," says Terry Stinson, Bell president and chief executive officer. "They have recognised the 609's capability to take off, land and hover like a helicopter and also to fly with the high speed and long range of a turbo-prop aeroplane."

Bell confirms that Japan is one of its key customer bases for the aircraft which it says has potential in the VIP transport as well as search and rescue sectors.

Mitsui plans to take an early delivery of one 609 to speed its certification by the Japan Civil Aviation Board.

Bell assumes complete ownership of the 609 programme next Monday following Boeing's decision to withdraw from the commercial helicopter market and dispose of its 49% stake in the 609 venture.
