On the third day of Farnborough air show, Airbus Defence & Space chief-executive Dirk Hoke oversaw a ceremony awarding prizes amounting to over $100,000 to the winners of its “Cargo Drone Challenge”.
The competition was conducted in conjunction with ground vehicle manufacturer Local Motors, and assessed the unmanned air vehicles en-tered on mission performance, weight and balance, and preliminary flight performance.
The winners were named as Alexey Medvedev, Harvest Zhang, Dominik Felix Finger, Finn Yonkers, and Frederic Le Sciellour.
The two companies now plan on building a demonstrator version of the winning design, and will openly collaborate with potential customers and end-users.
Another element of the challenge will see further work on commercial UAV services and applications carried out, and a “hack-a-thon” will be carried out in September that will see interested parties carry out problem-solving over a 24-48h period.
