In letters published by Flight International in August and October 2000, I defended Concorde from cynics who wanted the aircraft grounded indefinitely after the crash outside Paris, and pointed out its safety record before the crash was exemplary.

Almost three years on and those same cynics appear to have been granted their wish in view of the recent decisions by Air France and British Airways to discontinue Concorde service.

If there is any compassion in what is left of our aviation industry, Sir Richard Branson should be allowed to purchase them.
